Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.

Training & Mentorship

Compassionate Communication Training from Marshall Rosenberg's Nonviolent Communication (NVC), is at the core of our mission to create a culture of peace. "Simply put, Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is a way of relating to ourselves and others, moment to moment, free of past reactions. By learning to identify your needs and express them powerfully, as well as to bring understanding to the needs of others, you can stay connected to what is alive in you and create a life that it is more fulfilling." (from the cnvc.org website) These skills, practice and values are not just dipped into; they are the foundation of the language, consciousness and modeling of our leaders, youth and the CO.MUNITY organization itself which is built on Riane Eisler's partnership model of “power with” instead of the domination culture of “power over”.

Conscious Communication, as taught by Sandra Boston of the Conscious Communication Institute (CCI), has its roots in Marshall Rosenberg's NVC as well as teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, Arnold Mindell's Process Work and many others. It includes some important perspectives on fears of conflict and how our core values play a part in how we resolve our differences and why we sometimes choose not to negotiate our position.

Nurtured Heart Approach is an amazing set of strategies developed specifically for children with ADHD and other challenging behaviors to enrich parenting and classroom experiences. After many years of research, Gabrielli LaChiara finds this technique to be one of the best long-term, drug-free approaches to children's lifelong success that there is.

Mentor Training
• Mentors are men and women who come from the community where mentees live. We use a group mentorship model, with sometimes a one-to-one ratio of mentors to mentees. The mentor’s role is to witness, support and help reinforce life-enhancing behaviors and communication. The mentor’s purpose is to listen, accept, and to be present. All staff and mentors must complete mandatory 24 hours of training prior to their participation in the program. All staff and mentors must undergo an FBI / Police background check before working with youth. Mentors receive ongoing training and support and commit to participate throughout the year. Mentors are trained and coached in how to listen and develop skills of empathy (via the NVC model) and to offer acceptance and presence. They are not expected to give advice or to "process" mentees' emotional issues.

• Mentors make a commitment to nine months of mentorship twice a month in a group venue. Mentors serve without pay and are asked to pay for training if they can afford it (It is our intention to make financial aid or scholarships available so anyone can serve, regardless of their financial situation.) Every effort is made to keep any costs to mentors as low as possible. Cost could range between $30 - $35 per month (or $366 and $420 per mentorship year). Mentors with limited funds can apply for financial aid.
